SMSC and Protected Characteristics

At Wrockwardine Wood Infant School & Oakengates Nursery Federation, we are proud to be an inclusive community where the wellbeing and achievement of every child is at the heart of what we do. We believe that every member of our school family is of equal worth.

Our Commitment

The Equality Act 2010 provides the framework that underpins our work to:

  • Value and celebrate diversity

  • Tackle discrimination

  • Promote equality of opportunity

  • Foster positive relationships between people

We are also committed to tackling disadvantage and supporting all children to achieve their very best.

A Curriculum That Celebrates Diversity

Our inclusive curriculum gives children opportunities to experience, respect, and celebrate diversity. Through assemblies, stories, art, music, and educational visits, children learn the importance of living in a rich and varied cultural society.

Protected Characteristics

We understand the principles of the Equality Act and our responsibility to ensure that no one is discriminated against. The Act protects individuals on the grounds of:

  • Age

  • Disability

  • Race

  • Sex (including issues relating to transgender)

  • Gender reassignment

  • Maternity and pregnancy

  • Religion or belief

  • Sexual orientation

  • Marriage and civil partnership (for employees)

Addressing Prejudice-Related Incidents

Our school is firmly opposed to all forms of prejudice. We know that children and young people who experience discrimination may be disadvantaged in their education. To prevent this:

  • Pupils and staff are given training and awareness about the impact of prejudice

  • Any incidents are dealt with immediately and reported to the Local Authority

  • Victims are given support, and perpetrators receive appropriate education and guidance

Working Together With Families

We actively consider the needs of children, families, and staff in all that we do, for example by:

  • Collecting and monitoring information on race, disability, and gender in areas such as pupil achievement, attendance, exclusions, and staff training

  • Ensuring open evenings and events are held in accessible spaces and taking language barriers into account

  • Making sure communications are accessible to all parents, children, and staff

Keeping Our Community Informed

We regularly share our policies, objectives, and progress with the whole school community through:

  • Newsletters

  • Assemblies

  • Staff meetings

  • School website updates

You can find copies of key policies and guidance on our website, including behaviour, anti-bullying, special educational needs, safeguarding, and data protection.
